Spiritbox halts show to eject violent fan ahead of major UK tour

Spiritbox halts show to eject violent fan ahead of major UK tour

The Canadian metal band’s decision to stop a Phoenix concert to remove an aggressive attendee underscores growing artist-led safety interventions in the live music industry ahead of their upcoming European dates.

Spiritbox frontwoman Courtney LaPlante has defended the band’s decision to halt a recent concert to remove a violent attendee from the crowd. The incident occurred on July 15 at the Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, Arizona, while the band was supporting Evanescence alongside Nova Twins.

Before closing the performance with the song ‘Soft Spine’, LaPlante stopped the show after drummer Zev Rose identified an individual apparently harming other audience members. LaPlante instructed the crowd to identify the aggressor, stating the performance would not continue until everyone was safe, which led to the fan’s ejection.

The band subsequently faced online criticism, with one fan on X questioning if the action was a crackdown on standard hardcore dancing. LaPlante clarified that the individual was an "old drunk man punching people in head" in the VIP pit, emphasizing that he was not moshing and that security had been notified three times prior.

She acknowledged that limited initial information made it easy for critics to assume the band had penalized acceptable crowd behaviour. However, she maintained that protecting the audience was the priority, adding that she was not thinking about the internet when making the decision to stop the performance.

This incident highlights a shifting dynamic in the live music sector, where artists are increasingly taking direct responsibility for crowd safety. As venue security protocols face heightened scrutiny, performer-led interventions are becoming a notable factor in managing liability and preserving the fan experience.

The issue carries particular relevance as Spiritbox prepares for its most extensive UK headline tour to date this September. The run begins at Glasgow’s SEC on September 12, visiting Nottingham, Manchester, and Cardiff, before concluding at London’s OVO Arena Wembley on September 19.

Following the UK dates, the band is scheduled to support Metallica at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena on November 21. Their recent material, including ‘Soft Spine’ from last year’s ‘Tsunami Sea’ album, has garnered four-star critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance.

For promoters and venue operators, such public interventions serve as a reminder of the reputational and operational risks inherent in live events. Ensuring clear communication between artists, security teams, and attendees will remain critical as the European live music market continues its expansion.
