Oscar-winning Irish musician Glen Hansard dies in motorcycle crash at 56

The acclaimed singer-songwriter and actor died in a Dublin-area motorcycle crash, marking the loss of a foundational figure in Ireland’s cultural economy and live music scene.

Irish singer-songwriter and actor Glen Hansard has died at the age of 56 following a motorcycle crash in Lucan, on the outskirts of Dublin. The incident occurred early on July 29, cutting short the life of a defining figure in modern Irish music.

Hansard’s death represents a significant loss for Ireland’s cultural landscape and live music economy. He was widely recognized not just as a performer, but as a unifying force who consistently drew audiences together through public and charitable musical events.

Irish President Catherine Connolly paid tribute to his enduring impact on the nation's creative industries. She described him as "one of the vital driving influences of the Irish music world," noting that his work with The Frames inspired a generation of young musicians in the 1990s.

Former Irish President Michael D Higgins also issued a statement honoring his legacy. Higgins remembered the Dubliner as "a wonderful musician and performer, a troubadour whose gift for storytelling brought so much joy to audiences across the world".

Hansard first gained international prominence in 1991 with his role as Outspan Foster in the film The Commitments. That same year, his band The Frames launched their debut album, Another Love Song, under Island Records, establishing a foundation for his decades-long career.

He later achieved global acclaim as one half of the folk rock duo The Swell Season alongside Czech musician Markéta Irglová. The pair starred in and composed the soundtrack for the 2007 indie film Once, with their song Falling Slowly securing an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Beyond his domestic projects, Hansard maintained a strong footprint in the international rock circuit. He served as a guitarist in Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder’s solo band, The Earthlings, touring alongside Andrew Watt, Josh Klinghoffer, Chad Smith and Chris Chaney following Vedder’s 2022 record release.

Locally, his public life was defined by a longstanding commitment to charitable causes in Dublin. He hosted an annual Christmas Eve busk in the city centre to benefit homeless charities, an event frequently supported by U2 frontman Bono.
