Black Sabbath founder Tony Iommi to release first solo album since 2005
The pioneering guitarist will issue an eight-track record via BMG this October, underscoring the sustained commercial and cultural value of legacy rock intellectual property in the modern music market.
Tony Iommi, the founding guitarist of Black Sabbath, has announced his first solo studio album in nearly two decades. The eight-track effort, titled From The Dark, is scheduled for release on October 23 through the music company BMG.
The announcement coincides with the release of the lead single, World Alone. The track features Norwegian vocalist Jørn Lande, bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil performing alongside Iommi.
Iommi and longtime collaborator Mike Exeter co-produced the upcoming record. The guitarist unveiled the album details and the single’s music video at a special event in Birmingham, his hometown, participating in a public discussion with comedian Frank Skinner.
For the broader music industry, the release highlights the sustained market viability of heritage rock artists. Iommi’s recent appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire by King Charles reinforces his institutional standing, while his back catalogue continues to generate substantial revenue.
Black Sabbath’s 1970 self-titled debut is widely considered the first heavy metal album, initially reaching number eight on the UK charts despite mixed critical reception. Its 1970 follow-up, Paranoid, topped the charts, and the title track has now accumulated over one billion streams on Spotify.
Iommi’s previous solo efforts have been intermittent due to contractual obligations. His 1986 project Seventh Star was released under the Black Sabbath name, followed by the collaborative 2000 album Iommi and the 2005 record Fused, which featured Glenn Hughes and Kenny Aronoff.
The new album will also integrate Iommi’s recent cross-media ventures. Instrumental tracks Scent Of Dark and Deified, originally released in 2021 and 2024 alongside corresponding fragrances, will appear as exclusive bonus tracks on the CD edition of From The Dark.
The upcoming material reportedly retains the down-tuned guitar sound Iommi developed in the 1960s. Addressing the long-standing narrative that an industrial accident involving his fingertips directly inspired this sonic innovation, Iommi has previously pushed back against the idea.
In a 2016 interview, he noted that losing the ends of his fingers became a burden rather than a creative catalyst. Regarding the new project, he stated that the team enjoyed the process, adding: “We’re not trying to prove anything – it’s a great album, it rocks!”
