Dublin prepares for public mourning of musician Glen Hansard

The family of Glen Hansard has released logistical details for public memorial services in Dublin following the musician’s death earlier this week. These arrangements reflect the immense scale of public mourning anticipated across the Irish capital for the 56-year-old artist.
A public wake is scheduled for Monday, August 3rd, at the Baroque Chapel within the Irish Museum of Modern Art at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin 8. Hansard will lie in repose at the cultural institution from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This allows members of the public to pay their respects in a formal civic setting before the main religious ceremony.
The formal funeral service will follow on Tuesday, August 4th, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. While the service is officially open to the public, access inside the historic cathedral is expected to be extremely limited due to the vast number of anticipated mourners. Music during the ceremony will be performed exclusively by the late musician's friends and family.
To accommodate the overflow of citizens and international observers, a public address system will be positioned outside the cathedral grounds. The entire service will also be broadcast live to a wider audience via RTÉ News and the RIP.ie platform. In a move that directs public grief toward active civil society support, the family has requested that no flowers or gifts be sent. Instead, mourners are asked to channel financial contributions directly to the Simon Community and Ukrainian Action. Hansard died early Wednesday morning following a motorcycle crash outside Dublin. Remembered widely as an “Incomparable” Troubadour, his “Gift for Storytelling Brought So Much Joy” to audiences across Europe.
